What support has the company offered to mature learners? As a result of the decision taken by the New Labour Government in 2005 to make the learning of a first foreign language no longer compulsory in secondary education, which has consequently led to a fall in enrolment figures and job vacancies for qualified teachers of modern foreign languages, many further education colleges have sought to encourage widening participation in language learning by offering a number of evening courses to adult learners. In recent years, however, many college principals have decided to scrap courses of this kind at the expense of investing a greater amount of funding in provision for 16 - 19 year olds. This imbalance has evidently led to widespread dissatisfaction among students, particularly those who learn for sheer pleasure and are being denied the privilege of further study, unless they agree to undertake a prior examination which allows them to continue their studies at a higher level of learning.
While there is no doubt that a certificate can display a clear indication of one’s linguistic proficiency, it does not necessarily serve as proof of one’s (lack of) ability to cope with language at a further level. These are arguments which Lingua Genesis has continued to sustain and thus it will continue to tutor adult learners who have been unable to regain entitlement to learning languages in Barnsley, Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield and the surrounding areas, etc.
The student count of adult learners whom are taught privately by Lingua Genesis on an individual and small group basis has remained consistent over the last few years and began to sharply increase from May 2008. This may be due to the introduction of a growing number of new and innovative methods of teaching implemented into sessions over time, but it has been noted in any case, particularly since the first half of sole trader year 2007, that Lingua Genesis students have stamped their authority and determination to succeed at their chosen foreign language and acquired a great deal of comfort which has stemmed from improved linguistic proficiency.
As the company director, I also recognise the need to fix charges in such a way that they are fair, competitive, reflect efficient standards of teaching, and are affordable. I am currently seeking to further the range of independent learning products to encourage many learners to save money and thus acquire a sound knowledge of the preliminary and intermediate stages of a foreign language before they may choose to seek face-to-face tuition.
