How is it possible to dismiss the intimidation so often aroused by the mention of grammar?

Modern foreign language learners will agree that many of them quake at the sound of the word 'grammar', for the sheer way in which it is often taught or explained at full length in text books which deal too directly with the subject.  There is far too much complexity in the phraseology, which at times is beyond the comprehension of many learners, and it is important that measures be taken to erase the confusion which the learning of grammar has traditionally bred in the past. There is generally an apparent lack of structure in the way it is taught to our language learners, since it is introduced too hurriedly, as opposed to being subtly implemented on the back burner into other areas of language learning.
