Why do some language learners respond negatively to GCSE courses? Lingua Genesis has identified that a handful of subject tutors have resorted far too often in the past to teaching modern foreign languages on the primary basis of topics, without contemplating any approach as to how to integrate an understanding of language acquisition into their methodology. The company does commend the initiative taken by them to stress the need for pupils to develop conversational fluency, but the absence of knowledge as regards how a language operates in its syntax has regrettably led to so many GCSE pupils into the false belief that they would be able to cope with the higher order of skills and learning as set out under various criteria by examination bodies at A-Level. This observation does not seek to undermine the suitability of anyone to pursue and succeed at a foreign language, but it does overtly imply that the focus of modern foreign language syllabus aims at relevant key stages might be remodelled, so as to up standards of teaching and learning, as well as offer reliable advice to learners in terms of what will be expected of them at A-Level. |
